Clara Viebig, the poet who is close to nature, was so impressed by the Maars in the Vulkaneifel that she made them unforgettable as "Eyes of the Eifel". Around Daun you can find the Weinfelder- or Dead Maar, the Schalkenmehrener - and the Gemündener Maar.
All three Maars are easily accessible and signposted hiking trails lead around the Maars. The hiking tours can be easily started from suitable parking spaces. With the best weather we were able to take good pictures of the three beautiful Maars. Beautifully situated viewpoints guarantee good panoramic shots. The Schalkenmehrener "Doppelmaar" is followed by a flat moor and a dry maar.
In Schalkenmehren you can marvel at an 85 meter long bench on the banks of the maar - good for keeping your distance in corona times :-)
